We met Bill at a time when having run our business for 20 years we were beginning to think what we were going to do with it over the next 5 (given our stage in life). Bill helped us do this, but he did so much more.
He helped us look at how we took our money out which has saved us a lot of tax. He also identified that we were eligible for R&D tax relief that we had previously been told we could not get, again getting more tax back.
The plan Bill did with us identified we could get what we wanted within 5 years so we set out actions to tie in key staff, and improve our profitability by 50% a year which we have done. With our plan in mind we became more focused and when talking to a key customer we received an offer for the business. Bill helped us negotiate the deal and get it signed. David joined the business as interim FD to cover the short term absence of the incumbent FD. His main focus was on the debtors ledger which had overdue debt of circa £3m. He instigated a focused approach by business sector and utilised all of the senior team to make contact with each of their key contacts by supplier to raise the profile of the issue and instigate query resolution. This led to recovery of 95% of the debt and write offs of less than £50k, most of which was over 18 months old. He also restructured the existing finance team to establish a focused management accounts function and dedicated AR and AP processes. He developed improved management information for the owner of the business which led to improved margins through growth of higher margin products and cessation of margin draining services.
